Human remains were discovered in a suitcase recovered from New York’s East River off Manhattan, authorities said Wednesday.
The suitcase was spotted floating near Governor’s Island and retrieved by the NYPD Harbor Unit around 5:30 p.m.

It was brought to Pier 16 on South St. where first responders pronounced the victim, identified only as an adult, deceased at the scene.
The chief medical examiner’s office is working to determine the person’s identity and the cause of death.
The incident is under active investigation. Further details were not immediately made available.
