Alabama man arrested for shooting deaths of Georgia couple

A Georgia couple was shot to death in rural Alabama and authorities said they have a suspect in custody in connection to the slayings.

Michael McKenzie, 72, and Darla McKenzie, 68, were shot in Etowah County Tuesday afternoon. Michael was pronounced dead at the scene while his wife died at a Birmingham hospital.

Police quickly identified Christopher Scott Johnson as a suspect in the killings. He was arrested and charged with capital murder.

    “This is an incredibly difficult time for the McKenzie family, and our hearts go out to them,” said Sheriff Jonathan Horton.

    “The loss of loved ones in such a tragic manner is devastating and we extend our deepest sympathy to their family and friends,”

    “To the Etowah County community, I want to assure you that we are committed to ensuring justice is served and there is no threat to your safety.”
