A Michigan mother has been charged after she allegedly set her Grand Rapids home on fire killing her 12-year-old daughter.
Roconda Singleton, 46, allegedly locked her three daughters and removed all smoke detectors before she doused the home with lighter fluid and lit it afire on Saturday.
Shamiya Stewart, 12, died from her injuries two days later. Her two siblings, aged 10 and 7, survived after escaping the inferno.
“(Those were) screams that will live on in our ears for the rest of our lives,” Fire Chief Brad Brown said.
The mother allegedly told detectives she planned to die with the girls so “they could be free”.
Police said she had a history of paranoia and had been admitted for mental health treatment last summer.
Singleton was charged with first-degree arson and three counts of second-degree child abuse.
