2 missing Kansas children found dead in icy lake: ‘A tragic loss’

Two missing Kansas children were recovered dead from an icy lake after an extensive search, officials said.

Deputies with the Linn County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Lake Chaparral at around 8 p.m. Monday over reports of two missing children.

The children vanished for several hours but were believed to be near a local lake.

The sheriff’s office used an aerial drone and located the children who were trapped under ice.

  • An Overland Park Fire Department dive team pulled the bodies out of the water. The victims’ identities were not immediately made public.

    Jayhawk USD 346 school district sent condolences to the children’s families and the impacted community.
