Authorities in Gilbert, Arizona arrested a 33-year-old driver accused of crashing his truck into a senior living home killing an elderly woman before taking off.
The crash occurred at around 10 p.m. Friday when Joshua Michael Degolier slammed into the American Orchards Senior Community killing 88-year-old Mary Lillian Haapala.
Police arrested Degolier shortly later after he fled the scene. He has been charged with second-degree murder, failing to remain at an accident scene with death or serious injury, and failing to render aid to a person involved in a crash.
“We are saddened by this tragic loss of life and extend our deepest condolences to her friends, family, and loved ones,” police said.
Investigators believe impairment was involved in the crash.
