NJ police sergeant charged in fatal DUI crash that killed colleague

A Newark Police sergeant has been charged in connection to a fatal DUI crash that claimed the life of his colleague last month.

Victor M. Ortiz III, 34, was reportedly off-duty and drunk while driving his own car at twice the speed limit in the early hours of Dec. 12 when he fatally struck Newark Traffic Control Officer Jairo Rodriguez.

    He was rushed to University Hospital where he died around an hour later.

    Ortiz was charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter and second-degree vehicular homicide.
