Explosion, boat fire at Florida marina leaves 1 dead; 5 injured

One person was killed and five others injured after a boat explosion and a dock fire at a Fort Lauderdale marina, authorities said Monday evening.

Rescuers rushed to the scene at the Lauderdale Marina at around 6 p.m. Monday and found out that flames from a burning boat had spread to a nearby vessel.

Five people were sent to hospitals including three with “traumatic” injuries.

  • One person who was initially unaccounted for was later found deceased, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

    Witness Maria Sanz said she and her family were on the boat that caught fire after the initial explosion at a nearby vessel.

    “I thought it was like, a firecracker, but when I turned, it was a boat…We saw a lot of smoke,” she said.

    “I was screaming, screaming, screaming, and they told us we had to get out right away.”
