Akron boy, 8, fatally shoots himself after finding unsecured gun

An Akron boy is dead after he found an unsecured gun and accidentally shot himself, police said Monday.

D’Angelo Darrell, 8, shot himself in the torso on the second floor of his family home in the 1500 block of Evergreen Avenue shortly after 4 p.m.

The boy’s mother was home at the time of the accidental shooting and was the one who called 911.

  • Darrell found an unsecured handgun and accidentally fired a shot, investigators determined. He later succumbed to his injuries at Akron Children’s Hospital.

    The victim was a student at Crouse Community Learning Center.

    Authorities in Akron recommend storing “unloaded guns, medicines, and cleaners out of reach and sight (of children) in a locked safe, lockbox, or cabinet.”
