An Albany boy is dead and a girl is critical after they fell through an icy lake over the weekend, authorities said.
The 12-year-old boy reportedly tried to cross the frozen Washington Park Lake at around 4:30 p.m. Saturday when he fell through the ice.
The 11-year-old girl tried to help him when she also fell. She was rescued and transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital in critical condition.
A dive team recovered the boy’s body from the lake at about 7:30 p.m. that night.
Mayor Kathy Sheehan said the victims went surprisingly too far onto the lake despite its thin surface.
“It’s just a reminder of how fragile life can be and how important it is that we ensure that our children know and that everyone in our community knows that venturing out onto the ice is not a safe thing to do on any of the bodies of water here.”
