Minnesota teen, 16, drowns after falling through icy lake

A Minnesota teen died Monday after he fell through an icy lake, authorities said.

Woodbury Police and first responders rushed to Markgrafs Lake after receiving reports of a child who had fallen through the ice.

Rescuers were able to reach the scene in time to save an individual who was taken to an area hospital.

  • However, a 16-year-old boy was unresponsive when pulled from the lake. He was pronounced dead at the University of Minnesota Fairview East Bank Hospital three days later.

    The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Yahye Ali Abdi, of Woodbury.

    Abdi was remembered as “a remarkable soul, beloved by his peers and elders for his warmth, intelligence, and compassion.”

    The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources warned that people should remain away from icy bodies of water until the surface is at least 4 inches thick.
