A 5.7 magnitude earthquake rattled Nevada Monday afternoon and was felt as far away as Sacramento in California, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The tremor struck at 3:08 p.m. local time near Carson City, just outside of Reno, and about 16 miles northnortheast of Yerington, and occurred at a depth of .03 miles.
More than 30 aftershocks followed the major quake within minutes. The Seismological Lab at the University of Nevada is expecting aftershocks to last for the next couple of weeks.
It came just days after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rattled Northern California Thursday, sparking a tsunami warning.
“In Reno, we have big fault lines that right through the city, and Mt. Rose fault is one of the faults we keep a close eye on. There’s also big faults in the Lake Tahoe area, we feel a lot of earthquakes from them,” said Professor Christie Rowe.
“They’re certainly capable of generating earthquakes in the 6 to 7 range and that’s what we’re trying to prepare for and be ready for.”
