A head-on crash involving a transport van for special needs students has claimed two lives and sent nine people to hospitals Monday morning, authorities in Lee County said.
Deputies responded to the collision in the 3700 block of U.S. 29 northbound in the Opelika area at around 7 a.m.
A Valley Haven School transport van collided head-on with a Ford F-150 pickup truck before hitting a Nissan Xterra.
The driver of the Ford F-150 and a passenger of the Valley Haven bus were killed in the crash.
The Lee County coroner identified them as Tyrone Williams, 53, and Corbin Hamby Jr., 49.
Nine victims sustained injuries including the van’s driver and eight passengers.
They were transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional-Midtown in Columbus, Georgia, and East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
The Valley Haven School in Chambers County provides special education and training to children and adults with intellectual disability or developmental delay.
