A Florida police officer gunned down a woman who reportedly charged at him with a large knife Friday.
According to Lauderhill Police Lt. Antonio Gonzalez, the officer responded to a call for service at the Majestic Gardens but was confronted by the armed woman upon arrival.
The officer informed the department of the situation before shooting the woman when she allegedly charged him with the knife.
The woman died from her injuries at a hospital. It remains unclear whether she was the one who called 911.
“Any time an officer is confronted and can justifiably determine that his life or others are in imminent danger, then he’s authorized to use deadly force,” Gonzalez said.
“And that is what occurred today.”
The officer involved in the fatal shooting had been working for the department for three years.
He will be placed on leave as an investigation into the incident proceeds.
