Akron officer fatally shoots 15-year-old boy carrying firearm: ‘Every loss of life is a tragedy’

A 15-year-old boy was fatally shot by an Akron police officer on Thanksgiving night, authorities said.

Jazmir Tucker was reportedly carrying a loaded weapon when he encountered two police officers investigating shots being fired in the Sherbondy Hill neighborhood at around 11 p.m. Thursday.

One of the two police officers fired at the youth, who succumbed to the gunshot wound at an area hospital.

  • The two officers have since been placed on paid administrative leave as the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation probe the incident.

    “Every loss of life is a tragedy, and to lose a young life is heartbreaking,” Mayor Shammas Malik said.

    “I ask our community to reserve judgment until more facts are shared, knowing that it is a difficult thing to ask in situations like this.”

    The mayor said that body-worn camera footage will be released within days “to provide transparency into this incident.”
