Detainee dies in fire at Alaska police department

A detainee died Friday morning after a fire that broke out inside a holding cell at an Alaska police department.

Alaska State Troopers were alerted to the blaze at the Mountain Village Police Department.

Investigators said that two men were being held at the unit where the fire started.

  • One of them, 39-year-old Lawrence Chiklak, died in the fire. The other was evacuated from the cell.

    A preliminary investigation showed that the fire was started with a lighter by one of the two detainees.

    It remains unclear who started the fire that also injured a police officer and caused significant damage to two-thirds of the building.
