A dead baby was discovered in the bathroom of a New York City restaurant early Monday, authorities said.
The baby, whose age and gender were not specified, was found shortly before 10 a.m. inside the bathroom at Sophie’s Cuban Cuisine on Fulton Street in the Financial District.
Police and EMS responded to reports of an unresponsive infant in the restaurant and pronounced the baby dead at the scene.
“It’s horrific – it’s a baby,” a resident said. “I’m assuming it’s someone who had no other option. They’re probably desperate.”
“This kind of stuff usually points to a systemic problem. Why would a mother of a young infant feel so desperate to do that? Why would she feel she has no other option that to do that?”
A Sophie’s employee said police allowed the business to remain running as the investigation proceeds.
“Right now we don’t have any information. They’re doing the investigation. We don’t know anything.”
