Kansas high school student, 15, dies after suffering medical emergency: ‘It’s not supposed to happen’

A Kansas high school student is dead after he suffered a medical emergency during an offseason conditioning practice Wednesday.

15-year-old Ovet Gomez Regalado, a sophomore at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition before he died Friday.

“This is shocking news to all of us. It’s not supposed to happen. Young people aren’t supposed to die,” said Shawnee Mission School District spokesperson David Smith.

  • “All of us are just trying to come to terms with that and process it and to feel the grief that’s associated with this. This is not what is supposed to happen.”

    Smith added the teen, a beloved member of the Shawnee Mission Northwest Community, will be greatly missed.

    “From the reactions that I’ve heard from teachers and other staff that this was a great kid and there is really going to be a loss at Northwest.”
