4 killed, 10 hospitalized in series of crashes on Ohio turnpike

A series of deadly crashes on the Ohio Turnpike killed four people and wounded a dozen others early Thursday morning.

Traffic was stopped in both directions along the Ohio Turnpike near the Lucas County/Fulton County line after a series of at least three crashes.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed four fatalities. At least ten other people were rushed to local hospitals with injuries.

More than 100 first responders were at the scene including HAZMAT crews cleaning sulfuric acid, acetone, and methanol that spilled from a semi involved in one of the crashes.

Authorities said the first crash occurred at around 5:30 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of the turnpike in Swanton Township near milepost 48 and involved four commercial vehicles and a passenger car.

    The second crash unfolded just before 6 a.m. near milepost 49 in Fulton Township and involved two commercial vehicles and a passenger car.

    One person was confirmed dead and many others were wounded in the second crash that involved the semi hauling chemicals.

    The third crash occurred less than 30 minutes later near milepost 50.8 in Swanton Township and it involved two commercial vehicles and three passenger cars.

    One victim died in the crash and several others suffered injuries.
