‘Incredible leader’ Lt. Col. with Army Central dies during exercise at S.C. base

A decorated Lt. Col. with the U.S. Army Central dies during an exercise at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina on Sunday.

Army veteran Lt. Col. Roderick Vinson, 55, had been a member of the force since 1987 and was assigned to USARCENT in 2018.

“The ARCENT Family is devastated by the untimely passing of Lt. Col, Roderick Vinson, a beloved member of our team and an incredible leader in the organization,” said U.S. Army Central Deputy Chief of Staff Col. Jason Squitter.

  • Vinson received several awards including the Iraq Campaign Medal with two campaign stars and the Afghanistan campaign medal with campaign star.

    No foul play is suspected in Vinson’s death. The Sumter Police Department and the Sumter County Coroner’s Office are investigating the incident.

    “He left an enormously positive impact on every person with whom he interacted, and we miss him dearly,” Squitter added.

    “We sent our condolences to his family and friends, and our prayers are with them during this difficult time.”
