Mississippi officer fatally shot at traffic checkpoint; suspect killed in shootout with police

A Mississippi police officer was killed in the line of duty Thursday and his killer was later gunned down by fellow officers during an exchange of gunfire.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves identified the fallen officer as Troy Floyd from Summit.

Floyd was shot at a traffic checkpoint in the small southwestern Mississippi town “while heroically performing his duties as a law enforcement officer.”

The State Department of Public Safety said two officers were injured in a subsequent shootout with the suspect.

  • Reeves identified the two officers as Tyler Harvey and Joey Roberts. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

    “Our men and women of law enforcement represent the very best of Mississippi,” the Governor added.

    The suspect was killed in the exchange of gunfire with the two officers. The shootings occurred near a grocery store.

    The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will be handling the case.
