A Mississippi mother is behind bars on murder charges after she allegedly drowned her 2-year-old son on Tuesday.
Lauderdale County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a disturbance at a home on Bolen Long Creek Road at about 8 p.m., Sheriff Ward Calhoun said.
Once at the scene, they found out that the individuals involved in the disturbance had separated before locating a deceased 2-year-old boy.
Adrienne McDevitt, the boy’s mother, was arrested on scene and taken to an area hospital for undisclosed reasons.
Investigators believe she forcibly drowned the toddler.
“We are still of course awaiting the results in the coming days of an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death,” the sheriff said.
“But based upon our investigation, we charged Adrienne McDevitt with murder.”
Sheriff Calhoun added that the case had impacted all involved including the community, deputies, and first responders.
“It is a difficult job for these men and women to do, but they have done that job professionally, and we will treat this case like we do other cases where it will be thoroughly investigated and then present it to a grand jury for their consideration what that is appropriate.”
