A mother and her kindergarten student son were fatally struck by a school bus on their way to a suburban New York school Thursday.
The 43-year-old woman and her 6-year-old son did not make it to the Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School after they were involved in a deadly crash shortly after 8:30 a.m.
Police said the victims were among a group of passersby crossing Mamaroneck Avenue at the crosswalk with the sign on when they were struck by a school bus turning left.
The boy died at the scene while his mother succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital.
The 68-year-old bus driver is currently not facing charges as the incident remains under investigation.
“There is nothing more difficult for a community to experience than the loss of life,” the school district said in a statement.
“We know that everyone in the Mamaroneck and Larchmont communities is heartbroken by this news.”
