A New York City mother was charged after she allegedly left her small children unattended before a tragic fire that severely hurt them Thursday.
Skilyn Maldonado , 23, was reportedly out of her Washington Heights apartment for about half-an-hour before the fire broke out around 11 p.m.
Maldonado’s three children, aged 1, 2, and 8-year-old were alone inside the apartment. The older rushed to a neighbor’s door seeking help.
“She would just leave the kids home by themselves,” a neighbor said. “She doesn’t have a job at all. She would leave them alone, morning, day and night.”
“I saw the 8-year-old daughter alone coming up the stairs with milk the day of the fire. [She] left them alone about 6 p.m.”
About 60 firefighters worked to bring the devastating fire under control; The three children suffered burns and smoke inhalation with the toddlers listed in critical condition.
The mother was charged with three counts of acting in a manner injurious to a child.
