A young firefighter died Friday morning in the line of duty while battling a blaze triggered by a space heater in Plainfield.
Marques Hudson, 32, had only been with the fire department for two years when he tragically passed while doing his job.
Hudson and his crew responded to reports of a fire at a two-family home along Emerson Avenue at around 8:15 a.m.
“He was injured that he either fell through the floor or fell down the stairs, and we don’t know the circumstances at this time,” Mayor Adrian Mapp said.
Hudson was pulled from the home and taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he passed about an hour later. He leaves behind three children.
“We suffered a great loss today and the city suffered a great loss,” Plainfield fire director Ken Childress said.
“His firefighting career had only yet begun, but he will be remembered.”
