An Iowa teen died this week, ten days after he was fatally struck by a car while enjoying the winter weather with a friend.
13-year-old Adam McWherter was sledding down a snowy slope across a road on January 10 when a GMC Envoy fatally struck him.
Adam was playing with an 11-year-old boy who stopped when he spotted the car and tried to alert the victim.
The 49-year-old driver hit the brakes but the SUV kept sliding, striking Adam and landing in a ditch.
The teen suffered broken bones and bleeding in his skull and lungs. He passed away Saturday.
“He was not alone and received care very quickly but was instantly knocked unconscious,” A GoFundMe for the victim reads.
“His pulse was faint and did fade away. Paramedics were able to get his heart restarted after about 20 minutes with him in the ambulance at the base of the driveway.”
“He was then taken to Jones Regional. There they stabilized him as much as possible and prepared him for transfer to the University of Iowa where Adam was admitted to the Stead Family Children’s Hospital.”
“They were kneeling on the sleds, leaning forward, and using their hands to steer and brake. The last time they went down the driveway (the 11-year-old) got a head start, with McWherter, following close behind him,”
“(The 11-year-old) reached the bump first and saw a car approaching,”
“He jumped off his sled and tried to get McWherter’s attention. (The 11-year-old) did not think McWherter saw the car until McWherter made it to about 10-15 feet away from the end of the driveway and put his hands down to stop.”
Adam’s parents said that he initially showed some improvement before his tragic passing.
