Minnesota man, 80, dies when truck goes through icy lake

An 80-year-old Minnesota man died Friday after his truck went through ice on a lake, the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office said.

Richard Gadbois was found wearing a floating device in the water after ice broke underneath his truck.

  • He was pulled out of the water and taken to Mille Lacs Health System Hospital where was declared dead.

    Sheriff Kyle Burton said the ice where the truck went through was about six inches while the recommended thickness for a truck is between 13 and 17 inches.

    “This is another reminder to the public that ice conditions are not safe for driving cars and trucks on right now,” he added.
