A Michigan father is facing child abuse charges after his 8-year-old son shot himself with an unsecured gun earlier this week.

Kayvon Barrett allegedly waited 10 minutes to report the shooting that took place inside his Detroit home.

“Calls to 911 were delayed by 10 minutes. The adults around were more concerned with their own problems,” said District Court Magistrate Malaika Ramsey-Heath.

The boy found an unsecured gun on Tuesday and shot himself in the head. He has undergone surgery since the incident but remains critical.

  • “I honestly blame everyone in this house for not being more observant of weapons that could hurt children,” Ramsey-Heath added.

Child Protective Services have reportedly visited Barrett’s home more than once in recent years.

“There were findings of physical neglect and physical abuse,” the prosecutors alleged.

“The argument this resulted from neglect doesn’t make me real comfortable he’s not a danger to the children.”

Barrett was charged with four counts of second-degree child abuse.
