Authorities in St. Helena Parish arrested a 14-year-old student accused of firing multiple shots at a school killing another teen on Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting at St. Helena College & Career Academy took place at around 3 p.m., the SHP Sheriff’s Office said.
The gunman opened fire in the back parking lot of the school killing a student and wounding two others.
Officials did not identify the slain victim but a former teacher recognized him as an 11th grader and an athlete.
“When I went to Facebook and I saw the stuff all up and down my timeline, it’s like my heart just started skipping a beat,” he said.
“For his family to be here, to endure this, it’s a major tragedy, major tragedy. We need all the prayer we can get at this time.”
Classes have been canceled until Friday. One parent told reporters that her daughter witnessed the shooting and the victim’s death.
“It was unbelievable to her. Of course, a child sees something like that…I just hate she had to see that. It’s a lot.”
