An athlete participating in Ironman Wisconsin triathlon died Sunday after experiencing a medical emergency, authorities said.
The unidentified man felt unwell during the bike portion of the competition. He received medical attention at the scene from a staff member and an off-duty law enforcement officer until medical crews arrived.

The 51-year-old athlete died at the hospital. He is said to be a Madison resident. His identity is being withheld pending the family’s notification.
“We share our deepest condolences with the family and friends of the athlete and will continue to offer them our support as they go through what is a very difficult time,” event organizers said.
