A Laurel County, Kentucky toddler is dead after he shot himself in the abdomen with an unsecured gun, police said.
At around 9 p.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to the scene of the shooting at the boy’s Keavy Road home and immediately performed first aid.
The child was then rushed to a London hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said that the toddler found a loaded, unsecured pistol and shot himself in the stomach. It remains unclear how he got access to the weapon.
Later on Friday, the Laurel County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Daylon Scott.
An investigation into Daylon’s tragic death is being led by the sheriff’s office, the London Police Department, and the Kentucky State Police.
A sheriff’s office spokesman revealed that police are not weighing on charges in the case.
