A South Carolina toddler was killed in a tragic accident last weekend when she climbed a dresser that toppled on her trapping her underneath, police said.
22-month-old Ja'Laya Bryan was playing at her grandparents' home on July 30 when the accident unfolded.
First responders rushed to the Calhoun Falls residence where they found the victim in cardiac arrest. She was pronounced dead minutes later at Columbia's Prisma Health Trauma Services.
Following Ja'Laya's asphyxiation death, her grieving family issued a statement warning parents of indoor risks for children.
“My beautiful great-great niece, Ja'Laya, 20 months old, loved by everyone with her attitude and precious personality! Life will never be the same, but by God's grace, we will persevere!” the toddler's aunt Debra Putnam-Thompson posted on Facebook.
“Please, Please, double-check that your furniture is bolted to the wall, and doors are closed to keep tour littles safe!”
