A Matteson, Illinois boy was fatally injured Thursday evening in a shooting that stemmed from an altercation between school girls, authorities said.
A woman called 911 at 6 p.m. to report that her 9-year-old grandson was shot during a fight outside their home.
Police said that the boy succumbed to a gunshot wound in the abdomen and that a 20-year-old woman was also struck but is expected to recover.
The boy was later identified as Omuiri Jones Brown. His grandmother revealed that the shooting started when a girl who had fought with her granddaughter at school showed up with a group of her friends at their home.
The woman said that the girls started fighting before a teenage boy fired shots hitting the innocent child.
“His mom moved out and he stayed here because he didn't want to to Chicago because he was afraid of getting shot,” the grieving grandmother said.
