A Michigan man is behind bars after he allegedly left an unsecured gun in a couch leading to the death of a toddler Friday.
Authorities in Kentwood arrested Markus Nevills Jr., 22, on involuntary manslaughter charges in connection to the accidental shooting that claimed the life of 2-year-old Kiaire McCoy.
The toddler, identified as the son of Nevills' girlfriend, found the gun and fatally shot himself inside the family's apartment, police said.
“I don't understand this,” the suspect commented. “I'm trying to see how they're saying this is my fault. I didn't shoot and kill him.”
Detectives reported Nevills had told them that he “zoned out” while using marijuana and didn't pay attention to the child.
“It sounds like a terrible accident and there is no criminal intent there,” Nevills' attorney, Richard Zambon, said.
