A horrific crash involving three vehicles killed four high schoolers late Tuesday, authorities in Illinois said.
The victims, who were not identified pending next of kin notification, were traveling in the same car when the crash occurred at around 10:20 p.m. in the Chicago suburb of Wheeling.
Police said that three other people, including a fifth high schooler, survived the collision with injuries.
“Speed and a disregarded traffic signal seem to be the primary factors involved at this time,” authorities said.
The Buffalo Grove School district confirmed that the four teens who perished in the tragic crash and the one injured were all students of Buffalo Grove High School and aged between 16 and 18.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of these students during this time of tragedy,” said school district spokeswoman Stephanie Kim.
“We also offer condolences to all Buffalo Grove students, families, and staff members.”
