A 7-year-old girl was shot to death inside a Newark home where the bodies of two other people were found Wednesday, authorities said.
The child suffered a fatal gunshot wound in the chest following a domestic dispute at the Johnson Avenue house.
Officers responded to reports of the dispute at around 8:45 p.m. and spotted an armed man trying to escape, tossing a gun and pulling another. The suspect was shot dead by cops.
The New Jersey Attorney General's Office said that a “fatal officer-involved shooting” unfolded but declined to share further information citing an investigation that's still “in its early stages.”
“Tonight, there was a tragic shooting that left three people killed, including a child, and the perpetrator,” Mayor Ras Baraka said. “Three people dead. It's tragic.”
“This is the reason why we have to come together to death with issues of mental health, drug abuse, anger, conflict, and all kinds of other issues that we see in our communities in general.”
