Chicago officer shot dead while chasing armed suspect: 'Every officer is grieving today'

A Chicago officer died in the line of duty Wednesday while chasing an armed suspect, authorities said.

Officer Andres Vasquez-Lasso was shot multiple times while chasing the 18-year-old suspect who suddenly turned and opened fire at the cop from a close range.

Police said that the suspect also sustained a gunshot wound to the head and is listed in critical condition.

  • “Every officer is this police department, and for that matter, every officer in this country is grieving today,” Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said.

    “If you see an officer tonight, or the next day, or the day after that, thank them for their service,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said.

    The fallen officer was a five-year veteran of the force, Brown added.

    “He died while protecting Chicago and its people,” the department said in a statement. “We will never forget his selflessness and dedication as we continue to wrap our arms around his family and loved ones. Together, we mourn the loss of our hero.”
