An Ohio woman was found dead and badly mutilated in her backyard in a suspected dog attack, Toledo Police said.
Investigators said that surveillance footage caught the moment Bonnie Varnes was killed by her pet dog Amina as she took it outside on a leash Monday evening.
The dog pulled its owner down and attacked her, police said. She was found unresponsive in her backyard at around 6 p.m.
Varnes, 58, was a Washington Local Schools bus driver for the last three decades; her neighbor described her dog as being always friendly.
“You could tell that Bonnie definitely loved that dog. It was very well taken care of,” the neighbor added.
Authorities said that the dog remains in the custody of Lucas County Canine Care and Control.
“Obviously, the family can choose to euthanize the dog. Or, if they don't, we would deem the dog dangerous more than likely – that's usually what happens – and then it's up to the courts to decide the outcome,” said the LC4 community coordinator Cassie Bloomfield.
