Elderly Arizona woman dead in house fire while trying to save dogs; 2 relatives hospitalized

An Avondale family is grieving the loss of their 90-year-old matriarch who perished last weekend in a horrific house fire while trying to save her dogs.

Esther Cabrera died while two male relatives sustained third-degree burns and are currently in medical induced comas at the Maricopa County Burn Unit as they await to undergo surgeries.

“It's a lot for our family, so we are just sticking together,” Devynn Vasquez said.

  • Another relative, Juanita Guerrero said that Carbera's son Frank had tried to save her after he saved his son who had cerebral palsy.

    “He had her by the hand, but she released him because she wanted to get her dogs. But he ended up inhaling a lot of smoke and collapsed and couldn't get her out.”

    About the victim, Vasquez said that the dogs were everything to her.

    “She was a very loving, nice woman. She loved her pets, they were her life. She was trying to save her dogs but unfortunately, she didn't make it out.”
