Ohio mom, boyfriend charged after toddler dies from abuse: 'They should never get out of prison'

Hamilton County authorities charged a woman and her boyfriend with murder in connection with the death of a 21-year-old month who died from abuse last July.

Hydia Hamilton-Smith, 24, called the Police on July 31, 2022, requesting help for her son, Darnell Gamble, whom she said suffered burn injuries.

When officers arrived, they transported the boy to Cincinnati Children's Hospital where he succumbed to horrific injuries.

  • The toddler suffered head trauma in addition to cigarette burns, bite injuries, rib fracture, liver laceration, brain trauma, and damage to his optic nerve.

    Hamilton-Smith, who had been in police custody since August 2022, was charged with two counts of murder, two counts of endangering children, and one count of felonious assault and involuntary manslaughter.

    Her 31-year-old boyfriend, Rodney Williams, was charged with two counts of murder, one count of felonious assault, and two counts of endangering children.

    “Someone who is capable of something like this should never get out of prison,” Prosecutor Melissa Powers said.
