A migrant, likely from Venezuela, took his own life in the bathroom of a Queens shelter last week.
John Ortega, 26, was pronounced dead shortly after being found unresponsive by his wife, police said.
“This is absolutely a heartbreaking tragedy, and we are working closely with the family to support them during this incredibly difficult time,” the NYC Department of Social Services said.
“These families are coming to NYC after a months-long harrowing journey, in some cases, still reeling from the trauma they experienced along the way.”
The incident is the second suicide involving a migrant in New York shelters this year.
“We recognize the very unique challenges asylum seekers are facing and we remain committed to continuing to build on our ongoing efforts and interagency coordination to connect these families and individuals to mental health supports as we help them stabilize their lives in a new country,” the department added.
