Investigators in New York City revealed this week that a 40-year-old woman found dead after an apartment fire last month was actually burned alive and ruled her death a homicide.
The NYC Medical Examiner’s Office said that Sugerys Ramirez succumbed to thermal injuries sustained after a fire was intentionally set at a Van Siclen Avenue apartment on Nov. 11.
Firefighters pronounced Ramirez dead at the scene at around 4 a.m. after extinguishing the flames.
Police had at the time said that Ramirez was a squatter at the vacant apartment and that another person sustained minor injuries in the incident.
An investigation found that an accelerant was used to start the blaze which needed 40 minutes and around 60 firefighters to be brought under control.
