A New York Police Department officer was killed in a multi-car crash on Friday, Westchester County authorities said.
Sergeant Frank Gualdino, a 24-year veteran of the Yonkers Police Department, died when a 16-year-old unlicensed driver lost control of his vehicle and went against the traffic before ramming into his car.
The 53-year-old victim was to retire in nine months. He suffered head and body injuries and died at Jacobi Medical Center. The teenage driver was listed in critical condition.
“Our hearts are heavy as the City of Yonkers had experienced an insurmountable loss,” Mayor Mike Spano said.
“Sergeant Frank Gualdino was a cop’s cop and the epitome of Yonkers Finest. Yonkers is a close tight-knit community and when we lose one member of our law enforcement community, we all feel a sense of grief.”
“Frank was someone we all knew and loved. He was a friend and a family man – the best of all of us and the best of Yonkers.”
