South Carolina authorities were responding to several reports of active shooters at schools across the state on Wednesday.
Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies cleared the campuses, building-by-building, of South Middle School and Brooklyn Springs Elementary School.
The same situation occurred in Chester County where police presence at schools was increased following multiple calls about an active shooter at the county’s schools.
York County authorities said that they were investigating a state-wide hoax of calls reporting shooting incidents at local schools.
“We take these hoaxes very seriously and several law enforcement agencies are working together to find the culprit of this hoax,” the sheriff’s office said in a tweet Wednesday afternoon.
