‘Such a tragedy’: College basketball player killed, 8 others wounded when fight turned bloody during Father’s Day BBQ

A fatal shooting in Harlem claimed a young basketball player’s life Monday when a fight between attendees of a Father’s Day barbecue ended with a tragedy, police said.

21-year-old Darius Lee died and eight other people sustained injuries following the shooting that took place at12:40 a.m. Monday at an East Harlem park.

Police said that the victim, a Houston Baptist University student and the group were arguing while filming a rap video before gunfire erupted.

  • “We are devastated,” HBU basketball coach Ron Cottrell said. “Darius was a remarkable young man who loved the Lord, his mom, his teammates, his friends, and his entire HBU family.”

    NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said that the shooting unfolded on Father’s Day weekend when families should have been enjoying “themselves with their families.”

    “But we’re here to provide an update to New Yorkers about multiple people shot early this morning.”
