Foul smell leads police to elderly man’s body in trash can behind his Detroit home

A missing elderly man was found in a trash can behind his Detroit home after months of disappearance, police said.

Walter Dansby, 76, was discovered dead, wrapped in a blanket in the trash on May 17 after neighbors called police to report a foul odor.

  • “A neighbor in the area smelled an off odor he went to investigate, called us and we did, unfortunately, find a victim wrapped in a blanket in the large container in the rear of the location,” Detroit Police Chief Marlon Wilson said.

    “Right now we are asking the community to provide us with any information the smallest bit of information they might think won’t help could lead to something bigger.”

    Police added that the elderly victim suffered health issues and was reported missing by his family in January. A search of his residence at the time did not reveal any suspicious activity.
