New Jersey man claims ‘mercy killing’ after fatally stabbing ailing wife

A New Jersey man told investigators that he stabbed his elderly wife to death on Sunday to end her suffering, police said.

Dan Mook, 84, was also suffering self-inflicted stab wounds when officers responded to his Mont Laurel house and discovered the dead body of 82-year-old Sharon Mook.

  • Dan allegedly confessed to killing Sharon because she was very ill and in poor health; Burlington County Medical Examiner Dr. Ian Hood determined that Sharon’s cause of death was several stab and slash wounds.

    As of Tuesday, Dan was still hospitalized but police said that he will be detained as soon as he is discharged.

    He was charged with first-degree murder, third-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and fourth-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
