A Pearl, Mississippi woman was arrested after slamming her nine-week-old daughter to death against a road on Thursday.
Officers had responded to the incident on North Bierdeman Road at around 2 p.m. Once at the scene, they found another woman holding the badly injured infant.
The suspect had fled the scene to nearby woods but was arrested shortly later; she was identified as the baby’s mother 20-year-old Makaylia Shaylynn Jolley.
Emergency crews tried to save the infant’s life before rushing her to the Children’s Hospital of Mississippi in Jackson.
Though initially listed in critical condition, the girl later succumbed to her injuries.
Jolley’s charges were upgraded to murder on Saturday following the baby’s death. Her next court appearance is set for Tuesday.
