Weeks-old infant, boyfriend die in crash after mom shoplifted baby items, led police in chase

A Louisiana baby was killed earlier this week in a police chase involving her mother who had shoplifted baby items, authorities said.

Candace Gill, 38, was charged with two counts of manslaughter over the May 9 incident that killed her 5-week-old daughter and her boyfriend, Edward Williams.

  • Gill and Williams had shoplifted a store and fled in a silver Chevrolet Camaro when a police officer “pursued and activated his lights and sirens, but the vehicle failed to stop.”

    The suspect, who was behind the wheel, ran a red light and collided with another vehicle at the South Renwick Street intersection; Williams died instantly while the baby was rushed to a hospital where she later died.

    Gill reportedly tried to run away and hid at a nearby apartment complex in West Monroe but was arrested the following day.
