Lafayette toddler dies after accidental shooting at local hotel

A Lafayette toddler died of an accidental gunshot wound to the stomach Saturday evening, police said.

According to Spokesperson Sgt. Paul Mouton said that the tragedy occurred at around 5:30 p.m. Saturday inside a room of an Evangeline Thruway hotel.

A female family member told police that she left the room for a brief moment when she heard the gunshot, the reports said.

    Local news outlets reported that the victim was 4-year-old and that the child shot themselves once alone in the room.

    Lafayette Police are investigating the incident they described as an accident. No charges have been filed.
