A high school basketball parade went tragic Friday when a teen stabbed another dead in Mount Vernon, police said.
Police responded to reports of a stabbing at around 4 p.m. at the parade celebrating the state championship win of the Mount Vernon High School Basketball team.
When the altercation between the three teens began, the parade was reportedly nearing its end. Officers found two female victims suffering stab wounds, one of them died on the way to Jacobi Medical Center.
The other girl was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. A 15-year-old suspect was arrested and charged in connection with the death.
“I am devastated and completely outraged,” Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said following the incident.
“We began our day celebrating the greatness and success of our youth and we ended it with a young life that has been taken by senseless and inexcusable violence.”
